Optometry is the subject that deals with the medical care of human eyes. So an optometrist needs to diagnose clinically the condition of the eyes of his patients and suggest them the best remedies. Hence, formal education in optometry from a reputed institution is essential for taking up this job as a career. Since it is a medical profession, a B. Sc. degree in optometry makes a person capable of doing this job efficiently.
 

Optometry is a rare subject of the science stream that is offered in only a few colleges. The list of these colleges can be found out from the internet, along with all the admission criteria as printed on the brochures of these institutions. Only a limited number of seats are available for admission in B.Sc.Optometry, for which students should apply promptly.

This undergraduate course in optometry has the duration of 3 years, just like all other Bachelor’s degree courses. Students need to go through 6 semesters during this period before they can pass the final examination and achieve a degree in optometry. Then they need to work as interns for 1 year, to gain practical knowledge of eye care in the clinics.

Students need to attend various seminars, group discussions, mock interviews, and conferences held on various aspects of optometry. They are also taken occasionally to healthcare clinics or eye clinics, for gathering practical experience of handling patients. Thus, they are prepared for taking up optometry as a job or freelance profession.
 

It is necessary to pass the 12th standard examination for pursuing optometry course at the undergraduate level. Students need to study Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as their major subjects in the 12th level, for gaining admission in the Bachelor’s degree in Optometry. They should get good grades in these science subjects in their 12th standard board examination, for being eligible to study this course.

Educated optometrists can join reputed eye clinics and learn practical techniques of eye care from senior ophthalmologists or may pursue further studies in this subject.
